Articles about Entertainment
The word ‘entertainment’ is derived from the Old French entretenement, meaning ‘a diversion’. It can be anything that gives pleasure, amusement or diverts the mind – from a crossword to a polo match. In its broadest sense it includes ceremonial events, sports, games, music and films.
For example, one of the most famous examples of storytelling as an entertainment is Scheherazade – a story from Persian professional storytelling tradition about a woman who saves her own life by telling stories to her husband. This has been adapted in many ways including music by Rimsky-Korsakov and Ravel; film by Pasolini and others; and even an innovative video game.
Often you will see the word Entertainment abbreviated to entmt on fliers or in industry news publications, and it can also be used as a shorthand in note taking.
