In this article I’ll explore the various ways that we define Religion. Themes and concepts covered include the Myths, Rituals and Rules of behavior that define Religion. These concepts are often a foundation for understanding and defining Religious experiences. The following paragraphs will introduce some of the most common definitions. Hopefully they will help you begin your own exploration.
Religious experience
Several philosophers have attempted to define the religious experience. One of them, Rudolf Otto, defined it as an “experience infused with numinous quality,” implying that it has a mystical quality or a’mysterium tremendum’ (mystery of an awesome power). This experience evokes feelings of AWE or WONDER.
Myths
The Myths of Religion study is a field within the study of religious and cultural phenomena. These myths are used to establish and maintain moral values among groups of people and shape cultural worldviews.
Rituals
Rituals are repetitive, stylized behaviors related to religious beliefs and institutions. They can be performed individually or as a group, and can serve various purposes, such as satisfying spiritual needs, conveying respect, demonstrating affiliation, or complying with religious requirements. They also preserve religious traditions and make them more meaningful. Often performed by members of a specific community or organization, religious rituals are performed in conjunction with faith and can help preserve a religion.
Rules of behavior
One of the most annoyances for clergy and congregation is when children do not behave appropriately during a service. They should be kept from running or urinating on the church floor, or interrupting the preacher’s remarks. They should also sit quietly in a pew.
Cultural significance
Culture is a broad category that includes everything from language to social organizations to ideas. Religion is a part of a group’s culture and is influenced by its history and social organization. People learn religion through socialization, a process that includes family, education, politics, and the media.
Relationship to communication
Modern society has been influenced by religion in many ways. It can be a cause of social conflict and restriction, or it can serve as the root of social change. Globalization has changed the paradigm of social culture, making religion both an enabler and a hinderance. It is imperative that a perspective be formed regarding the relationship between religion and communication. To do so, we must consider the strengths and weaknesses of both religion and communication, and determine the ideal application for them in society.
